Semsee – Project 3
Appetite Checker Redesign
Overview Before an agent starts quoting, they need to know which carriers are worth approaching. That's exactly what Semsee's Appetite Checker is designed for — helping agents quickly identify which carriers have an appetite for their specific risk, so they're not pursuing dead ends before they've even begun.
The Challenge The existing Appetite Checker was functional, but it had room to grow. It was limited in scope — not enough lines of business or carriers to be as useful as it could be — and the UI was feeling out of step with Semsee's updated branding. As the platform evolved, the tool needed to evolve with it.
Discovery & Research Working closely with the team, we took a careful look at where the existing experience was falling short and what it would take to bring it up to speed. Two priorities emerged: expanding the range of lines available in the tool, and integrating a third-party classification enhancement to make risk identification more accurate and reliable. Together, these would make the Appetite Checker meaningfully more capable — not just a visual refresh.
Before
After
The Solution The redesign addressed both the experience and the functionality. The UI was updated to align with Semsee's refreshed branding, bringing the tool in line with the rest of the platform. On the functionality side, the addition of more lines of business broadened the tool's usefulness, while the third-party classification enhancement brought a new level of accuracy to how risks are identified and matched to carriers. Once an agent confirms their risk is in appetite, they can start an application directly from the results — with the information they entered in the Appetite Checker already prefilled, so there's no need to start from scratch.
Outcome The redesigned Appetite Checker gave agents a faster, more confident starting point. They could identify the right carriers more quickly, trust in the accuracy of the classification, access a wider range of lines, and move straight into an application without redundant data entry — all within the platform. The improvements were well received by both agents and stakeholders alike.
